Enjoy English with your child and with Pingu
You too can play an important part in your child's learning. Your interest, assistance, praise and patience will motivate and encourage them. Getting involved shows you care about their education which is key to their success.
Don't worry if you know little or no English yourself. Working with your child through our course is an excellent way to learn English together.
When you join Pingu's English, you'll receive a bilingual Pingu's English Parent's Guide. This will help you and your child get the most out of learning English – happily and effectively.
Tips for using Pingu’s English at home
Children are great learners because they’re often less self-conscious than adults. But your help can make all the difference to your child’s sense of achievement.
If you already know some of the language in the course, you can help by occasionally repeating some of the sentences to remind your child what they’ve learned. Or ask if they remember certain words.
Remember, your role is to help not to teach. Keep it fun!
Your child may have tasks to complete at home after their classes. This isn’t “homework” but a playful extension of the Pingu’s English learning experience.
The more your child is exposed to English, the more their understanding and confidence will develop.
‘Homework‘ after Class Type 1: Introduction
Your child will have heard the language used here, and possibly repeated the words or phrases. But they won’t have produced the language themselves.
Here’s where you can help them look over the Study Book read in class, watch the DVD again, listen to Song CD and perhaps encourage them to sing along and do the actions they remember from class.
‘Homework’ after Class Type 2: Expansion
Now your child will have practiced the language used here. Again, they may have been asked to look over the Study Book read in class. You could also watch the DVD again and also replay the Pinguland game they enjoyed in class.
‘Homework’ after Class Type 3: Consolidation
At this stage, your child will have practiced the key language here in a variety of different ways.
In addition to looking over the Activity Book they did in class, you might like to look at the Computer Time modules on the CD-Rom with them, listen to the Story CD, or look at the Story Book and ask them to tell you the story – or read it to them if you can.
‘Homework’ after Class Type 4: Review and Assessment
By now your child will have practiced and reviewed all the key language in a variety of different ways. Here you can review any of the activities at home, asking your child to show you what they liked best.
There are lots of games you can play with your child using the language they’ve learned in their Pingu‘s English classes. Here are a few suggestions:
- Memory: lay out some of the words they’ve learned from the Flashcards (or use the character figurines). Say what they are in English then cover them up. Can your child can tell you what's there in English?
- Alphabet Game: say a letter of the alphabet they’ve learned so far. Can your child think of any word beginning with that letter?
- Spy: say you’re thinking of a word (one your child has learned) and that it begins with a particular letter of the alphabet. Can your child guess what it is?
- Matching game: choose some of your child’s Object Flashcards they’ve learned and get the matching objects to go with them. Put the cards face down then ask your child to turn one over and try to find the matching object and say its name.
